The Screaming

Throughout my work, there is rarely a calm moment. My practice is focused on the interaction of materials, processing through emotions, and the response the work ignites in the viewer. As I work with the materials, I unravel and expose the rejected internal experiences to be considered a ‘put-together person in society. This unleashes the most honest experiences of my existence.

My materials parallel this often gross and overwhelming existence, with the use of gloss and texture mediums with highly saturated color on found and forgotten substrates. This focus on materials and emotional engagement results in many works being purely abstract forms but at times will include aspects of the body. Many of the works have an agitated, gestural, and overall haptic nature to the work. Complementing these marks are often highly saturated color palettes and 3D elements.

I consider many of the works ‘contemporary drawings’ which break the traditional concept of 2D works on paper but instead media including cardboard and plaster in conjunction with acrylic paint, watercolor, ink, and pastels to create intuitive and visceral works. I look to the viewers to be the ones to define the work, believing that a variety of multi-faceted interpretations is what completes the piece. At times the response parallels the feeling of existing with descriptions of disorienting and overwhelming while other times the viewer relates the work to social and societal issues.
