Ceramics

Ceramics is a newer medium emerging in Mordecai's work. The process of creating ceramic work heavily involves the body pushing, pulling, pressure, balance, and requires being present in the moment. Pieces misfiring, cracking, and shattering are risks when using this medium. With work that takes careful skill, knowledge, and physical exhaustion to make comes out in pieces, Mordecai responds with mending. Thinking of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi (a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection) Mordecai keeps their mending highly visible to the viewer using thread. By taking the time to hand-sew something that is broken back together is sitting with pain and choosing acceptance of what has happened and acceptance of this being an integral part of moving forward. Nothing will ever be the same and breaking is a bittersweet beauty of growing. Associations of trauma have stemmed from this process and will likely be seen in future work.
